COVELL ROAD CORRIDOR
City of Edmond / Oklahoma County / ODOT
The east-west Covell Road Corridor linking Interstate 35 with State Highway 74 is
the result of years of cooperative planning between Oklahoma County and the City
of Edmond. Triad was contracted for the design of three project segments connecting
these two major Oklahoma corridors.
Conversion of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad crossing at Broadway and
Covell into a high capacity underpass was the element identified as critical to
the Covell Corridor. The existing two-lane Covell Road and BNSF Railroad crossing
were insufficient for traffic resulting from Edmond's aggressive development and
an increasing number of trains serving the NAFTA Corridor.
In order to provide the necessary grade separation between Covell and the BN&SF
Railway, the old Boulevard/Broadway Avenue was widened and realigned from Danforth
to one-half mile north of Covell Road and the Broadway Avenue/Covell Road intersection was relocated
600 feet to the east. The new intersection and curvilinear roadway opened to traffic
in September 2007, earning Triad an ACPA Gold Winner Award for their design. The
completion of the Broadway segment allowed construction to proceed in 2008 on the
Railroad Underpass, which is expected to open in 2010.
A third contract segment of the Covell Corridor begins just east of Edmond's Santa
Fe Avenue and continues east past Mitch Park to Thomas Drive. Covell will be widened
to a 4-lane curb and gutter roadway with raised median and multi-use paths on both
sides. Triad's design will minimally impact adjacent properties while meeting ODOT
and City of Edmond requirements. Included in the scope of work is the reconstruction
of five north-south roads crossing Covell. Kelly Avenue, Thomas Drive, Bryant Avenue,
Coltrane Road and Sooner Road will be widened from two lanes to four-lane, curb
and gutter streets with turn-lanes and signalized intersections.
